OPIATE SUBSTITUTES

OPIATE SUBSTITUTES AND BLOCKERS

Methadone is an opiate, like heroin. It can come as a liquid to be drunk which is usually green, an injectable liquid and as a pill.

Methadone is swallowed or injected Methadone can be just as addictive as heroin, and some users have said that withdrawal from (stop using) methadone can actually be worse than coming off heroin.

Methadone is a class A drug (if it is not prescribed to you) and can only be carried and used by the person it is prescribed to.

Poppers makes your heart beat quicker, music sounds louder, especially the bass and gives you a head rush that lasts about 30 seconds. You are then left with what feels like a hangover (headache, feeling sick, tired, miserable).

It is highly flammable and toxic. There have been deaths from people who have drunk poppers.

Repeated sniffing (doing it a lot) can cause a rash around the mouth and nose.

SUBUTEX & NALTREXONE

Both subutex and naltrexone usually come as a tablet. They would be prescribed by a doctor or qualified drug worker. Sometimes these tablets need to be taken under supervision of a pharmacist.

Top Facts

Subutex is used to help people to stop using heroin. It is an opiate, like heroin, only it doesn’t have the strong effects of heroin. It is difficult to use as a recreational drug and can make you feel very ill if taken with heroin as well.

Naltrexone blocks the effects of heroin, so even if a person uses heroin on top of naltrexone, it won’t have the effects that a user wants.

Naltrexone also helps people with an alcohol addiction to stop drinking. Naltrexone does not get you high in any way you use it and is not addictive.

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT!!!

Using other drugs whilst taking methadone can be very risky. Alcohol can be particularly dangerous to mix with methadone (and all other drugs too!) as both are depressant drugs and could lead to you becoming ill, and in some cases even lead to accidental death.

Because of the effect that Naltrexone has on the body it is very dangerous to take any opiate drugs or medicines (things like heroin, methadone or even cough syrups which contain codeine). If you do you could feel the symptoms of withdrawal. It can also be dangerous to mix with alcohol.

It is too dangerous to take Naltrexone when you are pregnant and you might even pass the drug on to your baby through breast feeding.
